FBI Director Worried About Release Of Gitmo Detainees… But Is Robin Carnahan?

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

WASHINGTON ? FBI Director Robert Mueller told the U.S. House Judiciary Committee today that ?bringing Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States would pose a number of possible risks, even if they were kept in maximum-security prisons,? according to the Associated Press.

?The concerns we have about individuals who may support terrorism being in the United States run from concerns about providing financing, radicalizing others,? Mueller said, as well as ?the potential for individuals undertaking attacks in the United States? All of those are relevant concerns.?

Despite these concerns voiced by leading national security officials and from members of her own Party, Democrat Senate candidate Robin Carnahan has remained mum over whether or not she thinks detainees from Guantanamo Bay should be relocated to her home state of Missouri or elsewhere in the United States.

?First the Missouri state legislature passed a resolution rejecting Guantanamo detainees in her home state, and now the FBI Director has warned that bringing the prisoners to American soil could allow for ?the potential for individuals undertaking attacks in the United States.? If she?s serious about serving in the U.S. Senate, why hasn?t Robin Carnahan spoken out on this issue and explained whether or not she believes prisoners from Guantanamo Bay should be placed in Missouri? This is a straight-forward question and the voters in Missouri deserve to know where Robin Carnahan stands,? said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson.

When asked, Carnahan refused to publicly support the legislation to ban Gitmo detainees from being placed in Missouri or explain her position on this critical issue. When pressed on this important question, Carnahan vaguely responded, ?[W]e need to get past Guantanamo... We need to do things that reflect our values.?

The Missouri state legislature passed a resolution on May 13, 2009, urging ?Congress not to send any Guantanamo detainees to Missouri or even transport them through the state.?According to the Associated Press, the resolution ?urges the federal government not to imprison, provide medical care or transport suspected terrorists in Missouri.?
