Reid At Odds With Most Americans On Gitmo
Tuesday, 02 June 2009 00:00
WASHINGTON – A new Gallup poll released today indicates that U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) support for closing the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay is overwhelmingly opposed by the American people.
By a wide 2-1 margin, those surveyed by Gallup say Guantanamo should not be closed, while most Americans – by a margin of 40%-18% – also said the prison had strengthened national security rather than weakened it.
Notably, these poll findings come less than a month after Reid reiterated his desire to close the military prison at Guantanamo.
“Closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay is just one of many issues where Harry Reid’s position is simply out-of-step with the views of mainstream America,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) communications director Brian Walsh. “Instead of spending his time rubbing elbows with Hollywood elites at swanky fundraisers and catering to the far left of his party, the Senate Democrat Leader should focus on the concerns of his constituents, who clearly are rightly troubled by the concept of closing a detention center that houses some of the world’s deadliest terrorists.”
“Given his seeming tone-deafness on the critical issues facing his state and our country, it should come as no surprise that Nevadans strongly disapprove of Harry Reid’s job performance in the United States Senate,” Walsh concluded.
