Washington, D.C. – It’s the tale of two Arizona Senators. One Senator has clear convictions and is an independent voice for Arizona. The other is Mark Kelly who would be afraid to tell a reporter or a voter that the sky is in fact blue.
Nowhere is this tension more obvious than in the fight to preserve the legislative filibuster. Kyrsten Sinema is getting pummeled by liberal, dark money groups who want her to flip her stance on preserving the legislative filibuster. But Mark Kelly – who has never once given a clear indication of whether or not he supports the legislative filibuster – is flying under the radar. And it isn’t only Mark Kelly. Vulnerable Democrat Maggie Hassan is also equivocating on the filibuster to avoid pressure from liberal groups.
In Arizona, more than half of voters side with Kyrsten Sinema to preserve the legislative filibuster in order to promote bipartisanship in the Senate. It’s clear that Arizonans do not want their senators to abolish the filibuster. Unfortunately for Arizonans, Mark Kelly continues to hide behind his outspoken colleague and dances around giving a clear answer regarding the filibuster because he knows when it comes down to it, he will vote with Chuck Schumer and the D.C. special interest groups to abolish the filibuster.
