Washington, D.C. – Tonight, the U.S. Senate will vote on S.1, the “Corrupt Politicians Act,” a bill co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan. It is a vote that is doomed to fail, yet Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will hold the vote anyway to appease Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and avoid a primary fight in New York.
As Senator Joe Manchin said in an op-ed this month: “partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy.”
This puts Senator Hassan in a very tough position. S.1 is opposed by the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Governor Chris Sununu, and 40-year Democrat Secretary of State Bill Gardner who points out that the legislation could cost the Granite State their First-In-The-Nation primary.
Additionally, as pointed out by the NH Journal, under S.1:
“Federal law would ban states like New Hampshire from:
—Requiring voter ID.
–Requiring ID in order to register to vote.
–Requiring mail-in ballots to be witnessed; or
–Prohibiting or restrict “ballot harvesting,” the practice of campaign or party workers collecting ballots from voters and turning them in.”
In short, Senator Hassan is now walking the plank and voting for an unpopular bill that will hurt her state and has no chance of passing, all because Chuck Schumer is afraid of AOC.
