NRSC/RGA and New York Times Polls Both Find Americans Favor States Ending Enhanced Unemployment Benefits
Washington, D.C. – As American businesses continue to rebound and reopen, across the country they are struggling to find their most crucial resource – workers. In two recent national polls, a majority of Americans point to Democrat policies that pay Americans more to stay at home than to get a job as the reason for the current worker shortage.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee and Republican Governors Association’s recent National Battleground Survey found that 62% of Americans believe “overly generous welfare and unemployment benefits are preventing people from looking for work” because “the government is paying them to stay at home.”
A separate poll led by the New York Times found similar results with 52% of voters – including 50% of Independents – believing that enhanced unemployment benefits should end now. As the Times reported, the argument that “extra benefits are discouraging people from looking for jobs and making it hard for businesses to find workers” is resonating with voters. This survey also found that among respondents who are not currently working and are receiving unemployment benefits, a third said it is because they cannot find a job that is “worth taking.”
No American should be on the workforce sidelines because they can make more money staying on government benefits. Senate Republicans are proud supporters of the American dream and are doing all they can to help every American find a good-paying job. It’s time for Joe Biden and Senate Democrats to stop encouraging Americans to stay at home and start supporting policies that will help Americans get back to work.
