Senator Pat Toomey and Senator Rob Portman have recently spoken out against Obama’s dangerous Iran deal.
Sen. Toomey delivered this week’s GOP Address explaining the seriousness of this deal:
What’s at stake here is nothing less than the possibility of giving hundreds of billions of dollars to the world’s largest and worst state-sponsored terrorism, and ultimately paving the way for this outlaw regime to obtain nuclear weapons.
Sen. Portman wrote an op-ed in The Plain Dealer outlining his decision to reject the deal. Sen. Portman points out the deal fails to meet the criteria for the deal expressed in the beginning stages of the negotiations:
The broad goal, laid out by Congress, the Obama administration, and the U.N. Security Council, was that Iran would suspend all enrichment-related activities and not be permitted a path to ever pursue a nuclear weapons program. We also consistently maintained that any agreement must contain verifiable and enforceable mechanisms to ensure compliance.
I hoped that, with U.S. leadership, a strong agreement would meet the longstanding U.S. and internationally accepted criteria.
Sen. Toomey highlighted his top concern with the deal is the danger it puts our country in:
This deal would give Iran the capacity to inflict harm in much more destructive ways than it is currently able to do. This deal will make military conflict more likely, not less.
Sen. Portman adds that his most important concern is for our national security. He says,
The nuclear program is part of a broader Iranian strategy that is dangerous and destabilizing. According to some estimates, Iran could receive up to $150 billion in sanctions relief early in the agreement, with or without sustained compliance, which will encourage the Iranians to cause trouble, not discourage them from bad behavior.
The deal does not hold Iran accountable nor encourage them to honor the terms of agreement. This poses a threat to our national security, and Sen. Portman refuses to put our country in jeopardy.
Republicans have warned against the dangers of Obama’s Iran deal and side with the majority of Americans on the deal. National security is our top priority.
Sen. Toomey and Sen. Portman are not alone in opposing the deal. Sens. McCain, Burr, and Johnson have also expressed their concerns with the deal. In our Majority Is Working to Protect Us video, our senators agree national security should be our top priority. Watch the video below:
