Washington, D.C – Yesterday, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, on which Democrat Senator Maggie Hassan serves, voted along party lines to advance the nomination of Catherine Lhamon to serve as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education.
There’s just one problem. While serving in the position during the Obama Administration, Lhamon showed troubling judgement that could have a major impact as parents and school districts across America debate curriculums and the inclusion of Critical Race Theory.
Max Eden, a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said her nomination would be akin to beginning an “Office of Critical Race Theory,” writing:
“In her previous term at OCR, her modus operandi was to fabricate new interpretations of what civil-rights law requires, then tell educational institutions that they could lose federal funding unless they “voluntarily” agreed to adhere to these dictates.
No one should be surprised if Lhamon actually enforces CRT, by coercing school districts into “voluntary” resolution agreements that require “anti-racist audits,” mandate race-focused professional development for teachers or stipulate the hiring of diversity consultants and staff.”
So why on earth would self-described “moderate” and “independent” Maggie Hassan ever vote for such a radical nominee? Like most tough issues, we have little faith she will answer this question directly.
