Newsweek Details Incident Where Thirty Year Incumbent Gave Maternity Ultimatum to Aide, Saying She “Pushed Her Luck By Having Children Only Two Years Apart”
Washington, D.C. – What do Senator Patty Murray and the Chinese Communist Party have in common? A one child policy. As Newsweek reports:
“[Senator Patty Murray’s] former national security adviser, Pam Norick …was hired in 1993 at a time she was pregnant with her first child and on the agreement she could work from home on Fridays. After her second child was born, she was given an ultimatum – even though her son was premature and needed extra medical care.
“Murray now maintained that Norick’s four-day work week wasn’t fair to the other employees … According to Murray, Norick had pushed her luck by having children only two years apart. No other Senator, Murray insisted, would give an employee two maternity leaves in under three years. Thus, Norick quit her job …
“[Norick] said ‘My experience with Patty … was painful … As every mother on the planet knows, of course there was no question of what I would “choose.” I left my position in the U.S. Senate to ensure I could take care of my newborn’s medical needs.’”
So much for Patty’s brand as a “mom in tennis shoes” fighting for working women. Patty Murray should answer a simple question: Is this “one child policy” still in place in her Senate office and her campaign?
