Washington, D.C. – The disastrous, deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan was a national embarrassment on an international stage. Not only did we lose brave servicemembers, but we abandoned allies, and surrendered the country to an oppressive regime that has since committed horrible injustices to women and minorities. It’s so bad that some in the military community think that the country has fully reverted back to how it was pre-9/11.
Now, one year later, Senate Democrats – those tasked with foreign policy oversight – have swept the whole incident completely under the rug. In fact, they’ve been so silent that the Administration has circulated a memo touting the whole dark episode as a positive!
As vulnerable Senate Democrats scramble for good news to tout in their re-election contests, many are pretending that foreign policy blunders don’t exist. But, for many who have friends and family serving in harm’s way, it is never out of mind and people should be held accountable for the mistakes that led to last year’s catastrophic and deadly withdrawal.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “The withdrawal from Afghanistan will go down as one of the most embarrassing overseas actions taken by the United States. The lack of concern from Senate Democrats to understand what went wrong shows just how much they have allowed politics to cloud their judgment. The stunning gall of the Administration to tout the withdrawal as a positive should serve as a reminder to voters as to why we must restore proper oversight in the Senate by returning control to Republicans.”
