Washington, D.C. – It took 40 years for Chuck Schumer to rise to the helm of the Senate and only one year for him to screw it up.
The last several weeks have been the perfect encapsulation of Chuck Schumer’s first year leading the U.S. Senate. A failed “Build Back [Broke]” bill paired with a stalled effort to federalize elections and unnecessary attempt to scuttle the filibuster has led some to call him “…arguably the weakest majority leader in memory, especially compared to his two immediate predecessors, who were among the strongest.”
His “tough, even baffling, losses” have not only stunned many Capitol Hill observers and shipwrecked President Biden’s agenda but he’s done so while alienating two of his fellow Democrats who offer him the only chance at salvaging his legacy and majority. Not only that, but he put vulnerable Democrat Senators on the record on abolishing the filibuster, a divisive issue that had no chance of success.
As we have pointed out numerous times, much of Schumer’s recent self-destructive maneuvering in the Senate can be traced back to his fear of a primary from AOC and worry that his liberal base may flee when he needs them most during campaign season.
As Schumer stares down the final 10 months of his reign before voters head to the polls, there is no relief in sight. His narrow majority has been deeply fractured by his failed leadership and, without a miracle, his time as Majority Leader will mercifully come to an end in January 2023.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “This week was the fitting end of Chuck Schumer’s first year as Majority Leader: He tried to break the Senate, but he ended up breaking his caucus and the Democrat agenda instead. The last 12 months have been a historic display of incompetence that was not only self-serving but also forced his most vulnerable Democrat Senators into positions that will hurt them in November. While the Democrat establishment and Washington elites would give Schumer poor marks on his first year at the head of the Senate, the NRSC was proud to award him for his hard work on behalf of a Republican majority.”
