Washington, D.C. – The Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a threat not only to Germany and Europe but to the entire Western world. Once complete, Russia will hold significant leverage over Europe’s energy supply.
This week, the Senate is set to take up legislation by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) that would force the Biden Administration to levy significant sanctions against Nord Stream’s pipeline operators within 15 days. The Administration is already lobbying against it, and it’s working. Senate Democrats are starting to say this bill would be too mean to Vladimir Putin.
So today, Senate Democrats unveiled legislation that would impose a “more nuanced set of punishments against Russia.” But, with respect to Nord Stream 2, the legislation simply asks the President to, “consider all available and appropriate measures.”
In other words, this bill is cover for Democrats too afraid to take bold action against the pipeline that could cause major geopolitical problems within the NATO bloc.
This isn’t the first time the President and Senate Democrats have gone soft when it comes to America’s adversaries. The Biden Administration came under fire for reportedly trying to weaken a bill punishing China for its forced labor of their Uyghur minority.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is an unprecedented geopolitical problem and once again, Vladimir Putin is poised to emerge victorious thanks to the weakness of Senate Democrats and the Biden Administration. Time and time again they prove themselves unwilling, or perhaps too afraid, to take bold action against direct threats from our adversaries, all while consistently voting to kill pipeline jobs in the United States and the further production of American energy. Weak and hypocritical – a nasty combination for Senate Democrats.”
