Washington, D.C. – House Democrats voted to raise the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions. This gives their wealthy donors in states with high taxes, like Pelosi’s California and Schumer’s New York, a tax CUT while 30% of middle-class families will see a tax HIKE.
Val Demings proudly voted yes to send Floridians’ tax dollars to the wealthy in New York and California. But her Florida colleague Stephanie Murphy, who also voted yes on the Build Back Broke bill, is having second thoughts.
“Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) said the SALT deduction provision isn’t “helpful” to her, though she said lawmakers advocating for the changes were acting on the desires of their constituents.
“I certainly don’t think it was helpful from my perspective as someone who represents Floridians,” she said. “As a party, we have done so much talking about how this is about making sure people pay their fair share and taxing the upper-income people as well as [the] largest corporations. … Clearly SALT falls in the category that is not consistent with those goals and those values.” – The Hill
If that is the case, then why is Demings all in on a provision that will in turn hurt Florida families and force Floridians to subsidize the rich in high-tax states?
Statement from NRSC Spokeswoman Priscilla Ivasco: “Val Demings is all in for Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi’s agenda, no matter how many Floridians gets screwed in the process. Cutting taxes for millionaires and billionaires in New York and California will harm Florida families but Demings doesn’t care. As long as she remains in the good graces of Joe, Chuck and Nancy, she is fine selling out her constituents.”
