Washington, D.C. – Russia invaded Ukraine 12 days ago. Since then, millions have fled, war crimes have been committed by Putin’s army, and the undermanned Ukrainians have put up a historic fight.
Meanwhile, in the U.S. Senate, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has brought no real legislation to the floor concerning the suffering Ukrainians. No new military funding for Ukraine, no humanitarian aid, no new sanctions, nothing. In fact, Schumer gaveled the U.S. Senate – historically, the chamber with oversight on foreign affairs – out of session for a weekend recess just days after the invasion.
Why?
There have been other votes on liberal wish-list items, from abortion to postal reform, but not a single vote concerning the most alarming global conflict in recent history.
It’s obvious that Schumer is trying to pump as much liberal red meat through the Senate as he runs out the clock on a potential Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez primary challenge. However, the lack of focus on Ukraine is a cause for real concern.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “The world is watching how the United States responds to the aggression of Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. While the global community scrambles to put the squeeze on the Russian economy the U.S. Senate sits by idly. Chuck Schumer needs to put personal politics aside for a second and focus on the more important issues at hand.”
