Dem Divide Highlights Choice Between Angering the Far-Left vs. Angering Most Other Americans
Washington, D.C. – Most Americans agree that student loan debt cancelation is the equivalent of asking electricians and plumbers to pay for the degrees of doctors and lawyers, a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the upper class. But that’s exactly what the Biden administration intends to do soon. Even young Americans disagree with Democrats, with only 38% supporting the total cancelation of student debt. Yet, the issue is beginning to tear the Democrat party in two.
On one side is Senator Raphael Warnock, who is no stranger to embracing far-left proposals. Last month, Warnock went to the White House with Chuck Schumer to meet with President Biden to discuss student loan forgiveness. Biden, who has voiced support for canceling up to $10,000, met pushback from Warnock and Stacey Abrams who support forgiving up to $50,000.
“We certainly need to do more than $10,000,” Warnock said.
On the other side is a fellow vulnerable Senate Democrat, Michael Bennet. He took to the Senate floor to rip Biden’s and Warnock’s student loan forgiveness plans “unless it’s paired with bigger reforms” – a sentiment echoed by Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) earlier last month – because “he’s facing an increasingly tough re-election campaign.”
“Americans deserve more than just student debt relief. Across the board cancellation of college debt does nothing to address the absurd cost of college or fix our broken student loan program,” Bennet said.
Bottom Line: Warnock represents the wishes of radical liberals while Bennet represents “anxious” Democrats who have to choose between angering those radical liberals vs. angering the rest of their constituents. What may on the surface seems to be a tactic to attract the youth vote heading into a brutal election cycle is just another example of Democrats being trapped by their Far-Left base of voters.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “As Democrats argue among themselves how much money to give away, many Americans who are trying to pay off debt are struggling under Democrat-induced inflation, high gas prices, and more. If Democrats think dangling free money in the face of young Americans is the way to retain power, they are in for a surprise.”
